Hodgkin's Lymphoma Diagnosis

On August 02, 2016, during a routine examination with my primary care physician, I brought to his attention a swollen gland I had noticed in my neck that seemed to be getting larger. Upon further examination by my Physician it was determined that this was an enlarged lymph node and he recommended that I have a CAT SCAN of the affected area.

On August 15, 2016 I underwent a CAT SCAN and three days later my physician called me with the results.  He said the CAT Scan had reveled several more large lymph nodes and that this was abnormal. He then referred me to Dr. Pierre Rivet for a tissue biopsy of one of the enlarged lymph nodes.

On August 17, 2016, Dr. Rivet performed an excisional node tissue biopsy as requested by my Primary Care Physician. Prior to the procedure Dr. Rivet had cautioned me about this type of procedure.  He said tissue biopsies for the most part usually came back inconclusive and that a second biopsy of the entire lymph node might be needed to get a diagnosis. As suspected, my tissue biopsy came back inconclusive but suspicious.

On August 29, 2016, Dr. Rivet performed an excision of the left node with a biopsy.
Dr. Rivet called me at work on Friday, September 02, 2016 and gave me the results of the lymph node biopsy.

I had Classical Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

First Chemo Round

Hello Everyone,
It’s been a little over two weeks since my last post. On Friday September 23, 2016 I began the first of six cycles of chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

Jim and I arrived at UCSD MOORES CANCER CTR around 7:00am for my 7:40am Fast Track Infusion appointment. This appointment was a pre chemo blood draw to check my white and red blood cell levels before the chemo infusion.

Shortly after the blood draw I was taken back to the infusion area and prepped for my first round of chemotherapy. My nurse cleaned the area of my chest where the chemo port is implanted and started an IV.

For the next 2.5 hours I was mostly given hydration and medicines to prevent things like nausea, allergic reactions, and anxiety. At 12:07pm I received my first chemo drug, DOXOrubicin (ADRIAMYCIN), by IV injection.

Below is the schedule of drugs given for my first round of chemotherapy:

Smart Port CT Power - Injectable Port

Hello everyone, well today is the day I have get my Smart Port CT Power - Injectable Port implanted. I know many of you are probably interested in how this procedure is done. The video above is of a portacath similar to the I will have being implanted into a patient.

The Smart Port CT will become the primary vehicle for transporting the chemo drugs into my body. The port will also be used for repeated blood draws.
